The third Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Wimbledon Championships 2022, kicks off next Monday at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. As players from all over the world compete for one of tennis’s coveted trophies, players will not receive points in ranking by ATP and WTA during the tournament. Notably, Wimbledon 2022 was deprived of points in the standings due to the ban on players from Russia and Belarus.
This means that world number 1 Daniil Medvedev will miss the tournament, while world number 3 Novak Djokovic enters as seed. Other notable players absent from the tournament will be Andrey Rublev and Aryna Sabalenka. At the same time, 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will also miss the tournament as he has yet to recover from his injury.
However, the next edition of the major on the grass will see the return of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in single. Australian Open 2022 and French Open 2022 champion Rafael Nadal will participate in the tournament for the first time since 2019, in an effort to extend his record for multiple Grand Slam trophies.
