The Sea Beast review: is The Boys star’s Netflix movie any good?

While blockbusters are back in a big way this summer, animated offerings have been scarce on the pitch unless you’re a fan of the franchise.

If you don’t like it Light year or imminent Minions: The Rise of GruNetflix Original Movie is worth a trip The beast of the sea. Directed and co-written by Chris Williams (the co-director of Moana And Great Hero 6among others), the film arrived in select theaters ahead of its release on Netflix on July 8.

Inspired by the fantastic beasts that adorned nautical maps of the 16th and 17th centuries, The beast of the sea is set in a world where such beasts exist and humanity has responded by creating monster hunters to track them down and kill them at sea.

One such hunter is famed Jacob Holland (Karl Urban), part of Captain Crow’s (Jared Harris) crew on the Inevitable. But when young Maisie Brumble (Zaris-Angel Hator) hides on her ship for the latest mission, Jacob embarks on an epic adventure into uncharted waters.

The titular beast is the Red Bluster, the white whale for Captain Crow and our first glimpses are of a fearsome giant red beast, preparing us for a long chase film. After Inevitable’s battle with the Red Bluster at the end of the first act, however, the film plays its real hand.

Jacob and Maisie end up getting more intimate with Red Bluster than they had planned, opening their world to what’s really going on between man and beast. The core message here isn’t particularly new: guess who he is real the monsters are – but it is told in a moving way and without speaking to its audience.

It helps that the beast’s design evokes memories of Toothless from How to train your dragonand it’s just as adorable and quaint. The beast of the sea It also throws all kinds of cute beasts of all sizes into the mix, including Maisie Blue’s favorite who will challenge the Red Bluster as your favorite.

While creature designs invariably lean towards cute, design work elsewhere is extraordinarily realistic and detailed. From water effects to wide shots during set pieces, The beast of the sea it is amazing and gorgeous to look at. If your local cinema is showing it, the big screen experience is absolutely worth it.

The beast of the sea he’s especially impressive during his beastly set pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in an action movie. They’re imaginative, epic in size, and while there are some kid-friendly gags, they’re treated seriously and have real tension.

It is the scenes that give the film its unique touch, as otherwise How to train your dragon, but with marine animals. We’re not saying it’s not a winning mix, especially with a bit of swagger, but you need to have something else to do when the film turns out differently as you’d expect.

There is no doubt The beast of the sea it’s a journey worth taking though. It’s a visually spectacular and fun adventure with a well-told message that will be enjoyed by the whole family.

The beast of the sea is now available in select theaters and arrives on Netflix on July 8th.
