Monkeypox Vaccine Clinic Opens in New York – Here’s Who Eligible

New York City is launching a monkeypox vaccine clinic for people who may have been exposed to the virus.

With 28 people testing positive for the virus in the city since the beginning of May, the Big Apple now accounts for more than 20% of confirmed monkeypox cases in the United States.

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease, similar to smallpox, that has mainly occurred in Central and West Africa, but new outbreaks have been reported around the world this year. There were 3,308 confirmed cases in 42 countries as of June 22, with 155 cases reported in the United States. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Monkeypox is spread when a person encounters the virus through close contact with another human, most often through direct contact with a rash or sores from someone who has the virus, as well as through respiratory droplets that they may be spent in prolonged close contact, including sex. It can also be spread through close contact with a virus-infected animal or objects that may be contaminated with body fluids that carry the monkeypox virus, such as bedding or clothing.

And because monkeypox virus belongs to the same family as smallpox viruses, smallpox vaccines can protect people from contracting monkeypox. The Jynneos vaccine manufactured by Bavarian Nordic BVNKF,
was licensed in the United States to prevent monkeypox and smallpox. And this two-dose vaccine is what will be given New York’s new monkeypox vaccination site located at the Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic at 303 Ninth Ave., between West 27th and 28th, in Manhattan. The clinic is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 11am to 7pm local time. You can make an appointment at

People who may have had recent monkeypox exposure were already eligible for the vaccine in New York. The city’s health department has now expanded eligibility to “all gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (cisgender or transgender) aged 18 and over who have had multiple or anonymous sexual partners in the past 14 days”. This is because, while anyone can contract and spread monkeypox, most cases in the current outbreak have been between gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men, the health department explained.

New York joins similar efforts to vaccinate against monkeypox Montreal And Toronto in Canada. The UK, which has the most reported cases of monkeypox (793 as of June 22, according to the CDC), it recently expanded eligibility for monkeypox vaccines by tens of thousands of people to stop the spread.

At the beginning of June, the US government announced it had ordered 500,000 additional doses of Jynneos to be delivered by the end of the year. This would add to the 72,000 doses of Jynnous that the government already had on hand, as well as a previous order for 300,000 doses from vaccine manufacturer Bavarian Nordic.

The original smallpox vaccine, ACAM2000it has also been shown to be about 85% effective in prevention monkeypoxalthough there were some severe side effects. Like this about half of all Americans have some immunity against monkeypox because they have been vaccinated against smallpoxalthough smallpox vaccinations mostly ended in 1972, after the disease was eradicated in the country.
